Robert Hodgins South African/British, 1920-2010

Overview

Robert Hodgins (1920–2010) was a British-born South African painter, printmaker, ceramicist, teacher, and satirist. He became an important anti-apartheid artistic voice whose expressive flat, planular, and ludic images of malevolent men and whimsical females broke from a more austere anti-apartheid practice. He is considered one of the most influential South African artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Hodgins was born in London but moved to South Africa in 1938. During the Second World War, he served in South Africa’s Union Defence Force. At the end of the war, he went to study at Goldsmiths in London, but after his studies, he returned to South Africa to teach, first at the Pretoria Technical College School of Art and then at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Robert Hodgins is one of South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists. His work is widely deemed to be some of the most visually arresting critiques of apartheid and its social milieu.
