The Nama community’s deep roots in the Richtersveld landscape created a repository of
intangible knowledge which continues to serve as spiritual inspiration in their struggles
against outsiders. While the Richtersveld has been declared a heritage site, the proliferation
of mines and low-key tourism compete with indigenous Nama farmers’ grazing space and
rights. Growing volumes of mine waste also inevitably leach into the landscape and corrode
its physical beauty. In the face of these pressures and the scars on the Richtersveld, Bidklip is
an indigenous symbol of meditation, remembrance and spirituality.
